Happy Valley Racecourse

Happy Valley Racecourse was a fantastic experience and my first time attending night racing. Seeing the track surrounded by the brightly lit stadium and city skyline created an incredible atmosphere that felt completely different from any race meeting I’d been to before. A unique and memorable evening that was one of the highlights of my time in Hong Kong.

If you're in Hong Kong on a Wednesday night, you have to go to Happy Valley. 🐎💨

The energy here is absolutely insane… it’s like a massive outdoor party mixed with high-stakes horse racing, all wrapped up in a stadium surrounded by glowing skyscrapers. For just HK$10 entry, you get live music, cheap beer, and the crazy experience of shouting at the track alongside locals and expats alike.

Even if you don’t bet, just people-watching the chaotic mix of old-school gamblers and partygoers is worth it. 10/10 experience! 🍻🎟️

A great time. Easy to get to on the tram (3hkd for any ride) stops outside the track. Free to enter with your passport or 10hkd if you don't have it. Book a seat on 2/f (2nd floor) for 20hkd each. Betting is easy, fill a slip out or just tell them what you want at the window (cash only). Most windows min bet is 20hkd (about £2). Food and drink options are plentiful but we ate at the Happy Valley bar just before the Happy Valley tram stop. Races are about 30 mins apart with entertainment on Happy Wednesday.

To our surprise entry for tourists is free, so in we went smiling as tourists usually get ripped off. Although we were there early the razzamatazz of race night was already in full swing, music, bright lights, but no obvious signs of bookies or the tic tac men. We felt our way around and found a very helpful attendant who showed us how to bet using one of the large touch screens, similar to those in McDonald’s. So we were now in our element.

I got Gemini AI to forecast the winners from the programme we got from the self vending machine. With bets placed and a beer in hand we found a couple of seats high up in the terraces with a reasonable view of the finish line. We had an hour to kill before the race but like these things it was interesting just watching the antics of the crowd.

Soon the horses were being paraded up and down and our horse, number four Savvy Twinkle, appeared on the big screen looking rather grand, a winner in the making. Ten minutes later the gates opened and they were off. The race was only over a thousand metres so no sooner had they started than we were on our feet egging Savvy Twinkle on. As the pack surged past us Twinky was ahead by a nostril. My goodness, he was going to win. And yeah, he did. First race and we were already up. Not sure what the odds were I decided to go and collect our winnings. To my surprise I got $480.00 including my $100.00 stake, a profit of £38.00. Well done Gemini AI.

Sad to say that’s where our luck ended as the next five races went without a place. Halfway through we consoled ourselves with another large beer, a huge hotdog and a bucket of fries.

We left two races before the end as they didn’t finish before eleven o’clock and we had a bus and train to catch back home. We actually caught a tram which rattled us to the MTR where we caught the train back. Unfortunately we left the station from the wrong exit and even with the help of Google Maps live, which doesn’t seem to work very well in the dark, we got completely lost. Fortunately this is an extremely safe city and even the dark corners feel safe. By luck we came across a street that Ros recognised so we were back on the straight and narrow back on the route home.
